SEO Isn’t Dead — It’s the Foundation AI Depends On

There’s a question echoing through every marketing department right now: has AI made SEO obsolete? Senior managers are asking if they should overhaul their strategy for the age of ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini. The short answer is no — and understanding why requires a quick look under the hood of how AI chat actually works.

The Search Index: Still the Centre of Everything

For decades, SEO has been about getting search engine crawlers to find, understand, and store your content in their index — that giant digital library powering Google, Bing, and others. What most people don’t realise is that AI chat relies on the exact same infrastructure.

When an AI gives you an answer, it’s doing two things. First, a component called a “retriever” pulls relevant information from a search index. Then, a language model reads the best results and synthesises a new answer. The search index is the non-negotiable link between traditional search and AI chat. Without it, the AI’s retriever finds nothing. If your content isn’t indexed, it simply doesn’t exist to the AI.

Even AI Says So

We asked Google’s Gemini about this directly. Its response was unambiguous: ignoring traditional SEO is a mistake. Gemini described SEO as “the foundation of what’s next” — with “what’s next” being Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.

The SEO Onion

Think of your content strategy as an onion. SEO is the core — the essential, mandatory first step to getting seen in the age of AI. GEO and other AI-specific techniques are thinner layers on top. They matter, but they’re meaningless without that strong core.

The bottom line: SEO isn’t dead. It’s the prerequisite for everything that comes next.
